The Tui (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae) is one of New Zealand's most territorial native birds. Tui will aggressively defend fruiting or flowering trees from which they feed and vigorously chase other birds away. In good light, tui have an iridescent blue-green plumage and distinctive white throat tufts. Recent research prove tui are amongst a small number of intelligent birds with a register of more than 300 songs, with some singing thousands. Their songs are a complex and loud mix of notes interspersed with grunts, wheezes and thumps.
