A tui stands on a branch at the botanical gardens in Kelburn. The tui (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae) is one of New Zealand's most territorial native birds. Its unique white throat tufts, feather collar and dark green plumage make it one of New Zealand's most distinctive birds. Since 2001, the tui population in the Wellington region has seen an eight-fold jump in their recorded numbers.
